Why it matters

  • wedotv launches two new FAST channels, wedotv Sports and wedotv True Stories, on Deutsche Telekom's MagentaTV in Germany
  • Dynamic Ad Insertion now applies to the existing wedotv Movies channel and both new channels, allowing programmatic, targeted ad booking
  • The expansion comes four years after wedotv Movies launched on MagentaTV in April 2022

The story

wedotv is adding two FAST channels, wedotv Sports and wedotv True Stories, to Deutsche Telekom's MagentaTV platform in Germany, and is introducing Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) across its entire channel line-up on the service.

The move turns what was a single-channel distribution deal into a three-channel portfolio with a programmatic advertising capability attached. Alongside the two new channels, DAI will also apply to the existing wedotv Movies channel, which has been carried on MagentaTV since April 2022. Advertising clients can now book ad slots programmatically and target their delivery to specific audience segments.

The expansion marks a shift in the commercial model behind the partnership. For the first four years, the arrangement rested on ad-supported free streaming of a movie-focused channel. DAI changes the economics: instead of linear-style ad breaks sold through traditional insertion, wedotv can now sell addressable inventory against all three channels, which is the core proposition FAST channels offer advertisers in mature streaming markets.

Philipp Rotermund, CEO and co-founder of wedotv, framed the announcement as a deepening of the existing relationship. "We are pleased about the expansion of our successful cooperation with MagentaTV, which began four years ago with the launch of wedotv Movies. Now we are taking it to the next level: With Dynamic Ad Insertion, we are creating new, attractive and contemporary advertising spaces for advertising customers. At the same time, we are offering MagentaTV viewers even more program diversity through additional German-language channels," he said.

For Deutsche Telekom, the addition supports its addressable advertising strategy on the TV platform. Dr Jörg Richartz, Vice President Marketing & Control TV at the operator, said: "FAST Channels are an important part of MagentaTV. With wedotv Sports and wedotv True Stories, we are expanding our programme variety with two attractive offerings and consistently developing the possibilities for addressable advertising. In this way, we are creating added value for our customers and advertisers at the same time."

The channel line-up itself covers distinct content genres. wedotv Movies carries a range of international feature films and series. wedotv Sports combines live sports broadcasts with highlight formats and sports documentaries. wedotv True Stories focuses on factual programming spanning society, history, crime and real-life stories.

The timing matters for both parties. Telekom has positioned FAST channels as a structural component of MagentaTV rather than an add-on, and securing exclusive-orientation German-language FAST content with addressable ad capability strengthens that position against competing German TV platforms that are building out their own FAST line-ups. For wedotv, DAI gives the ad-supported streamer a monetisation upgrade on a carrier that reaches Telekom's German broadband and IPTV customer base.

The announcement does not disclose subscriber figures, carriage terms or projected advertising revenue. What it does establish is that the April 2022 partnership has moved beyond simple channel distribution into a joint advertising play, with three German-language FAST channels now bookable programmatically on MagentaTV.

The next indicator to watch will be whether wedotv extends DAI and additional FAST channels to its other carriage partners in Germany, or whether Telekom seeks further FAST inventory from other providers to build out MagentaTV's addressable advertising catalogue.
