Why it matters

  • AgileTV and Ålcom commercially launched the Play+ cloud TV service, announced October 27, 2026.
  • Play+ combines live TV, streaming and on-demand content on a single cloud platform.
  • Several of Finland's national fibre network operators have begun commercial launch of the service.
  • The platform is offered as a white-label TV-as-a-Service that operators can brand and sell without running their own TV infrastructure.
  • No subscriber numbers, pricing or coverage figures were disclosed.

The story

Cloud TV technology vendor AgileTV has commercially launched Play+, a unified TV service built with Finnish telecom operator Ålands Telekommunikation Ab (Ålcom), and the platform is now live with several of Finland's national fibre network operators. The announcement, dated October 27, 2026, extends AgileTV's footprint in the Nordic region and adds a second named partner to its European expansion story.

Play+ combines live television, streaming and on-demand content in a single cloud-based platform. AgileTV supplied the end-to-end technology stack; Ålcom commercialised it locally under the Play+ brand. The vendors position the result as a white-label TV-as-a-Service offering that operators can rebrand and sell without building or running their own television infrastructure.

What does the service actually deliver?

According to the two companies, three things sit inside one product:

  • Live linear television channels
  • Integrated streaming services
  • On-demand content

All three run on AgileTV's cloud platform rather than on operator-owned broadcast or middleware systems. AgileTV describes the platform as scalable, efficient and, in its own words, "future-ready" — a vendor marketing formulation rather than a verified performance claim. No subscriber targets, channel counts, pricing or throughput figures were disclosed in the announcement.

The commercial model matters more than the feature list. Play+ is pitched at operators, principally fibre network operators, that want a television proposition attached to broadband but lack the scale or the engineering resources to operate a full TV platform. Ålcom and AgileTV take on the platform operation; the operator takes the customer relationship under its own brand.

What do the executives say?

Koldo Unanue, CEO of AgileTV, framed the deal as geographic growth: "This agreement marks another important milestone to growth in the Nordic region. Play+ showcases how our platform enables operators to provide engaging, flexible TV experiences while optimising operations and accelerating innovation."

Tom Bengtsson, CEO of Ålcom, emphasised the operational argument for operators: "Together, we have created a competitive and scalable white-label TV-as-a-Service offering that enables operators to provide their customers with a high quality TV experience without the complexity of building and operating their own platform."

Both statements are promotional in character, but they confirm the division of labour: AgileTV supplies the technology, Ålcom anchors the local Nordic commercialisation, and Finnish fibre operators carry the service to end customers.

What does this change for Nordic operators?

For smaller Finnish fibre carriers, the practical change is access to a converged TV product — live, streaming and on-demand in one interface — without capital investment in proprietary TV headends or middleware. The rollout has already been finalised, so the service is available now, not a roadmap item. What the announcement does not establish is traction: no operator names, subscriber numbers or coverage figures accompanied the launch, so commercial uptake remains unproven.

Nordic expansion continues

AgileTV, which describes itself as a provider of cloud-based TV and media technology solutions, has made the Nordics a stated growth priority, and the Ålcom partnership follows that strategy. The company presents the deal as evidence of its expanding European footprint and of demand among telecom and media companies for cloud-delivered television.

The launch coincides with a broader industry shift in which telecom operators across Europe move television delivery from broadcast and hardware-based platforms to cloud services, seeking lower operating costs and faster feature updates. Play+ is one concrete instance of that shift in the Finnish fibre market.

AgileTV has indicated no further rollout dates, but the partnership model — a regional operator commercialising the platform for national fibre carriers — provides an obvious template for repeat deployments across the Nordics, and the companies say their collaboration will continue to drive the service forward.
