GSMA Intelligence: 6G to reach 1.3 billion connections by 2033
GSMA Intelligence projects 1.3 billion 6G connections by 2033, a forecast that implies a faster adoption curve than 5G managed in its first decade. The number is a demand-side model, not a deployment tally.
Why it matters
- GSMA Intelligence forecasts 1.3 billion 6G connections by 2033
- 5G launched commercially in 2019 and passed one billion connections roughly four years later
- The forecast assumes 6G commercial launches in the second half of this decade, with volume uptake from year three
- The ITU's IMT-2030 framework began taking shape in 2024, with 3GPP Release 21/22 standards expected later this decade
- The projection tilts heaviest toward North-East Asia, where carriers typically upgrade earliest
The story
The GSMA's research arm expects 6G to reach 1.3 billion connections by 2033, a forecast that quietly resets expectations for how fast the next wireless generation scales once it lands.
The figure comes from GSMA Intelligence, the data unit of the mobile industry's main trade body. It assumes 6G networks enter commercial service in the second half of this decade, with subscriber numbers then compounding through the early 2030s. That is a noticeably steeper curve than 5G managed.
How does 6G's projected uptake compare to 5G's?
5G passed the one-billion-connection mark roughly four years after its first commercial launches in South Korea and the US in 2019. The new forecast implies 6G could cross that same threshold inside three years of commercial debut, if the GSMA's modelling holds. Faster, in other words, on a shorter runway.
The comparison is the story's centre of gravity. 5G overtook 4G on adoption speed because device ecosystems matured faster, mid-band spectrum cleared earlier, and operators had learned the capex choreography from the LTE build-out. 6G inherits all three advantages, plus a decade of software-defined network architecture that should trim integration costs.
What is the forecast actually based on?
GSMA Intelligence has form on these calls. Its 2020 outlook projected 5G would reach roughly 1.8 billion connections by 2025; operator tracking data has largely confirmed that figure. The 6G number leans on similar inputs: addressable mobile user base, assumed technology migration rate, and a regional weighting that tilts toward North-East Asia, where carriers tend to upgrade earliest.
Methodology noted, the assumption stack is still tall. No 6G network is in commercial service today. The ITU's IMT-2030 framework only began taking shape in 2024, and the 3GPP standards releases that operators actually build to are not expected until the Release 21/22 window later this decade.
Who is even working on 6G?
Plenty of operators and vendors, in writing at least. Major carriers in Japan, the US and parts of Europe have published early 6G vision documents. The usual vendor names are running parallel R&D programmes, mostly around sub-THz spectrum, AI-native air interfaces and energy efficiency. None of that converts into subscriber numbers yet.
The 1.3 billion figure is therefore a demand-side model, not a deployment tally. It tells you what GSMA Intelligence thinks the addressable market looks like in 2033, given a launch somewhere in the 2027-2029 window. It does not tell you who builds first, who wins, or how regulators will divvy up the new airwaves.
Why does this matter now?
Because capex planning starts years before networks go live. Operators sketching five-year investment cycles now have a benchmark, even if it is a soft one. Vendors chasing government 6G funding have a number to point at. And policymakers drafting national 6G strategies in the US, EU, China, Japan and South Korea have a demand curve to argue from.
Watch the 2027-2028 window. That is when most major operators expect first commercial 6G launches, and the GSMA's curve assumes volume uptake from year three onward. If those launches slip into 2030 or beyond, the 2033 headline moves with them.
