- Earlier at Sony he worked as CFO of the US Blu-ray disc-manufacturing division during the format's 2006 US launch.
- Zixi describes itself as a specialist in live video delivery and workflow orchestration serving broadcasters, sports leagues and streaming platforms moving from satellite to IP.
- The October 6 announcement includes no revenue, employee count or deployment metric from the privately held vendor.
The story
Zixi has appointed John Towers as Chief Financial Officer, drawing on a media-industry operator who steered Sony's US Blu-ray manufacturing launch in 2006 and ran its digital video distribution build-out from 2012 onward.
The October 6 announcement puts Towers in charge of Zixi's finance function as the live-video orchestration specialist scales to serve broadcasters, sports leagues and streaming platforms moving live feeds off satellite and legacy contribution infrastructure toward IP networks.
What does Zixi do?
Zixi markets itself as a specialist in live video delivery and workflow orchestration, selling software that broadcasters, sports leagues and streaming platforms use to transport live feeds over IP rather than satellite or dedicated SDI circuits. The company's pitch to chief technology officers rests on cost and flexibility gains at a moment when major sports rights holders and streaming operators are pulling live workflows off legacy contribution networks.
That migration has accelerated as cloud playout and software-defined video replace hardware encoders and dedicated fiber at the live-feed handoff.
Who is John Towers?
Towers joins Zixi directly from Fabric Data, a SaaS provider of entertainment-industry metadata, where he spent three years as CFO managing operational expansion. Before Fabric Data, he spent two years in corporate development at Deluxe, following Sony's sale of its digital video distribution business — a transaction Towers himself oversaw.
At Sony, he served as COO and President of the digital video distribution division, having joined it as CFO in 2012 as the market shifted to OTT. Earlier in his Sony tenure, he was CFO of the division responsible for manufacturing Blu-ray discs in the US, where he worked on the format's 2006 launch.
Why this hire, why now?
Zixi CEO Marc Aldrich framed the appointment in transition-economics terms.
"John has spent his career inside the kind of transition our customers are going through now," Aldrich said. "He understands the economics of moving from physical to digital and from legacy to IP, and he has scaled finance and operations at both a global media company and a fast-growing SaaS business. That combination is exactly what we need as Zixi grows."
Towers, in turn, cast Zixi's current proposition as a rerun of earlier industry inflection points.
"One theme has run through my whole career, from pharmaceutical manufacturing onwards: helping businesses move from old infrastructure to new," he said. "I came into media with Blu-ray in 2006, moved into digital distribution and OTT in 2012, and watched the industry rebuild itself. Zixi sits at that same turning point today, helping broadcasters, sports leagues and streaming platforms deliver live video reliably over IP rather than costly legacy infrastructure."
What does the announcement not say?
The press release contains no revenue figure, employee count, customer base size or deployment metric. The company statement frames the hire purely as an operational scaling move and does not flag any imminent funding round, acquisition or strategic transaction.
What to watch next?
Expect Zixi to publish deployment and customer-count updates through 2027, when a wave of sports rights renewals and streaming-platform expansion plans will test satellite-based contribution limits and pull more live video onto IP networks.
