Why it matters

  • Vodacom Tanzania and TBL signed a two-year MoU to train more than 26,000 retailers nationwide
  • The Retailer Development Programme (GRIT) combines physical and digital training in business management, cash-flow, stock control and digital literacy
  • Retailers will be onboarded to Vodacom products including Lipa kwa M-Pesa, SME Bomba, M-Wekeza and M-Koba

The story

Vodacom Tanzania and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) have signed a two-year memorandum of understanding to train more than 26,000 retailers across the country in business, financial and digital skills.

The initiative, called the Retailer Development Programme (RDP) and running under the slogan "Growing Innovatively Together" (GRIT), pairs TBL's national retailer network with Vodacom's connectivity, digital services and mobile financial products. The operators describe the goal as improving retailer efficiency, profitability and resilience in a digitalising economy.

TBL Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Neema Temba, framed the partnership as an investment in the retail base rather than a short-term commercial push. "Through this partnership with Vodacom, we are investing in skills development, digital adoption and business sustainability, ensuring that retailers are better equipped to grow their enterprises and seize new opportunities," she said.

The curriculum covers business management, financial and cash-flow management, stock control, sales and marketing, customer service, entrepreneurship, responsible retailing and digital literacy. Training will run on a hybrid model that combines in-person sessions with digital platforms, and the two companies will jointly monitor and evaluate the programme to measure its impact.

M-Pesa ecosystem at the centre

Beyond classroom content, the programme will push retailers onto Vodacom's merchant and financial product stack. Four services are named in the agreement:

  • SME Bomba — a business intelligence and payment ecosystem for small merchants
  • M-Wekeza — a digital wealth management service
  • Lipa kwa M-Pesa — a mobile money merchant payment service
  • M-Koba — a digital fundraising service

Vodacom Business Director Nguvu Kamando said the partnership shows how technology can help small businesses raise productivity and gain access to financial services. The two companies position all four products as tools for financial inclusion, business efficiency and digital transformation.

The commercial logic is straightforward. Every retailer onboarded to Lipa kwa M-Pesa becomes an active merchant on Vodacom's mobile money rails, generating transaction revenue and deepening the operator's hold on Tanzania's SME payments market. For TBL, better-run retailers with stronger cash management and stock control mean a more reliable and formalised distribution channel for its beverages.

Formalisation of small trade

The programme also targets the informal practices that dominate Tanzanian small trade. According to the announcement, RDP is expected to help retailers formalise and strengthen day-to-day operations, particularly in cash management, inventory planning and customer engagement. Participants will also be introduced to digital and financial solutions intended to improve profitability and customer engagement.

Neither company disclosed the financial value of the MoU or specific training milestones for the two-year term. The stated metric of 26,000 retailers sets a measurable benchmark: the joint monitoring framework agreed under the MoU will determine whether the programme reaches that base within the two-year window.
