Nokia has completed the sale of its fixed wireless access business to US vendor Inseego, exiting consumer premises equipment to focus on network infrastructure.
Why it matters
- Nokia has completed the sale of its FWA business to Inseego
- The divestment removes consumer hardware from Nokia's portfolio as it focuses on network infrastructure
- Financial terms of the completed transaction were not disclosed
The story
Nokia has completed the sale of its fixed wireless access (FWA) business to Inseego, the US-based wireless device vendor, closing a transaction that removes one of the last consumer hardware lines from the Finnish vendor's portfolio.
The deal hands Inseego Nokia's FWA product line, which supplies gateways and outdoor units that operators use to deliver broadband over mobile networks, particularly in markets where fiber deployment is slow or uneconomic. The completion marks the end of a divestment process Nokia initiated as it narrows its focus on network infrastructure — mobile transport, IP and optical, core networks and network cloud — rather than customer-premises equipment.
For Inseego, the acquisition adds an established FWA portfolio and a broader operator customer base to a company already known for 5G broadband devices, MiFi hotspots and IoT modems. FWA has become one of the fastest-growing fixed broadband delivery methods worldwide, with operators across North America, Europe and emerging markets using mid-band 5G spectrum to connect homes that fiber does not reach. Inseego now holds a stronger position in that segment at a time when operator demand for 5G FWA gateways continues to rise.
For Nokia, the sale continues a portfolio slimming strategy under which the company has exited or reduced exposure to consumer-facing hardware businesses. The vendor's remaining units concentrate on selling radio access networks, transport, fixed networks and licensing to operators and enterprises — capital-intensive segments where Nokia competes with Ericsson, Huawei and Samsung.
The transaction also reflects broader consolidation in the FWA device market. As operators in the United States and elsewhere expand home internet services over 5G, device suppliers have scaled through acquisition to offer full product ranges across 4G and 5G generations. Inseego's enlarged portfolio positions it against rivals such as Huawei, ZTE, Sercomm and Arcadyan in operator device tenders.
Nokia said the completion of the sale closes the divestment, with the FWA business and its personnel transferring to Inseego. Financial terms of the completed transaction were not disclosed in the completion announcement.
Inseego is expected to integrate the acquired FWA line into its device roadmap in the coming quarters as it targets operators upgrading their fixed wireless offerings from 4G to 5G.
