Why it matters

  • Mediacom announced on October 6, 2026 that Variety TV subscribers get ESPN Unlimited at no additional charge.

  • Coverage spans NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA, WWE, NASCAR, Wimbledon and Big 12 football and basketball.
  • Content is available live and on demand across smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, computers and game consoles.
  • No promotional end date was given, indicating permanent inclusion in the Variety package.

The story

Mediacom Communications is giving its Variety TV subscribers access to the ESPN Unlimited streaming plan at no additional charge, the US cable operator announced on October 6, 2026.

The move folds one of the most expensive standalone sports streaming products in the US market into a mid-tier pay-TV bundle, a distribution decision aimed squarely at slowing cord-cutting among sports-focused video customers.

What do Variety subscribers actually get?

The ESPN Unlimited plan opens Mediacom's Variety customers to ESPN's full network portfolio. The lineup includes:

  • ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN on ABC
  • NFL Network and ESPNU
  • SEC Network, SEC Network+ and ESPNEWS
  • ACC Network and ACC Network Extra
  • ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes

Live rights attached to the package cover the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA and WWE, plus PGA Tour golf, the Masters, the PGA Championship, Wimbledon and NASCAR. College sports extend beyond the SEC and ACC to Big 12 football and basketball, with postseason coverage included.

Studio programming such as SportsCenter, First Take and College GameDay is also part of the deal.

Where can customers watch?

ESPN Unlimited content streams live and on demand across smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, computers, game consoles and other supported devices. That multi-screen access effectively converts a traditional cable video subscription into a hybrid linear-streaming product, matching how Disney has positioned ESPN's direct-to-consumer offerings since launching its flagship streaming tier.

For Mediacom, the fifth-largest US cable operator by footprint and heavily concentrated in smaller Midwest and Southeast markets, sports rights have long been the anchor keeping legacy video customers on bundle plans. Adding ESPN Unlimited without a price change gives Variety-tier subscribers a direct-to-consumer product worth meaningful standalone money for free.

Why bundle rather than upsell?

The commercial logic tracks a wider industry pattern. US pay-TV distributors are increasingly negotiating wholesale streaming rights into carriage renewals, so that a video subscription no longer stops at the set-top. Operators lose video subs either way; bundling streaming tiers at least keeps the billing relationship — and the broadband line it typically rides on — inside the operator's walls.

Mediacom framed the addition as a straightforward value increase for Variety customers rather than a new tier or paid add-on, which positions the bundle against virtual MVPDs and ESPN's own direct subscribers in its markets.

The announcement did not specify whether the arrangement stems from a renewed carriage agreement with Disney's ESPN or a separate wholesale streaming deal, and no end date or promotional window was mentioned — indicating the access is structured as a permanent feature of the Variety package rather than a limited-time offer.

Mediacom said customers can activate the service now through their Variety subscription.
