Why it matters

  • Hans Vestberg was named senior advisor at Evercore after leaving Verizon.
  • Verizon replaced Vestberg as CEO in October 2025, ending a tenure of more than seven years.
  • Vestberg spent more than 25 years at Ericsson, including over six years as CEO.
  • In February 2026 he became a senior adviser to AI data centre company Digipower X.
  • Evercore CEO John Weinberg said Vestberg's experience will strengthen the firm's client advice.

The story

Hans Vestberg, the executive Verizon replaced as CEO in October 2025 after more than seven years in charge, has taken a new role as senior advisor at investment banking advisory firm Evercore, where he will provide technology insights to the bank's clients.

The appointment gives the New York-based independent advisory firm one of the most experienced telecommunications executives in the industry. Evercore provides strategic and financial advice to boards of directors, management teams and shareholders across mergers and acquisitions, capital structure, restructurings and strategic shareholder consulting.

Evercore Chairman and CEO John Weinberg said Vestberg's decades of leadership experience in global telecommunications, together with his knowledge of technology, international markets and complex strategic matters, "will further strengthen the advice and insight we provide to our clients."

Why does Vestberg matter to an investment bank?

Vestberg's career spans two of the biggest names in telecom. Before joining Verizon, he spent more than 25 years at Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson, including more than six years as its CEO. He then led Verizon, the largest US wireless operator by most measures, from 2018 until Dan Schulman succeeded him in October 2025.

That track record covers both sides of the operator-vendor relationship: network procurement and standards-era technology transitions at Ericsson, and large-scale capital investment decisions at Verizon. For an advisory firm whose business depends on judging the strategic value of telecom and technology assets, that combination is the asset Evercore is buying.

The role is advisory rather than operational. Vestberg will not run a business line at Evercore; he will add industry depth to the guidance the firm sells to boards and management teams weighing M&A, restructuring and capital allocation in the technology and telecom sectors.

What has Vestberg done since leaving Verizon?

The Evercore position is his second advisory appointment since his departure from Verizon. In February 2026 he became a senior adviser to Digipower X, an AI data centre infrastructure company, to support its expansion plans.

The pairing of the two roles signals where Vestberg sees demand for his expertise: infrastructure investment, and specifically the compute and connectivity buildout tied to AI. Data centre expansion and telecom network strategy increasingly draw on the same capital markets and financing expertise that Evercore sells.

For the telecom industry, the move also illustrates a broader pattern: operators and vendors losing top executives to the financial and AI infrastructure sectors, where valuations and investment flows have shifted over the past two years.

What comes next?

Vestberg's calendar now splits between Evercore's client advisory work and his role at Digipower X as that company pushes forward with its expansion plans in the AI data centre market.
