gFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek unveil Wi-Fi 8 gateway for 20-gig fiber
gFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek showed a Wi-Fi 8 gateway with an on-device Hexagon NPU at Network X 2026, built for gFiber's symmetrical 20-gig fiber tier.
Fiber & BroadbandWhy it matters
- gFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek unveiled a symmetrical 20-gig Wi-Fi 8 gateway at Network X 2026.
- The device runs on Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform with a Hexagon NPU and penta-core CPU.
- gFiber migrated most of its network from GPON to XGS-PON (up to 8 gig) and deployed 25G-PON for 20-gig service.
- Existing gFiber 20-gig customers get the gateway first; all 20-gig customers will be upgraded after certification.
The story
gFiber, Qualcomm Technologies and Gemtek have jointly developed a Wi-Fi 8 broadband gateway capable of symmetrical 20-gigabit speeds, with the device demonstrated publicly at Network X 2026 and positioned as gFiber's flagship router for its top-tier fiber customers.
The gateway is built on Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform and combines concurrent quad-band Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) connectivity with a dedicated Qualcomm Hexagon Neural Processing Unit and a penta-core CPU. That hardware stack, paired with Qualcomm's edge AI software framework, lets agentic AI run directly on the gateway rather than in the cloud — a design choice the partners say reduces latency and keeps sensitive home-network data local.
What will the gateway actually do?
gFiber, formerly Google Fiber, demonstrated three use cases at Network X:
- Intent-based parental controls — natural-language voice commands such as "Pause social media on my kids' devices until 7 PM" trigger agentic AI on the gateway to take the corresponding network action, with no cloud round-trip.
- Frictionless guest access — a voice request generates a QR code on the router's front-facing interactive touch screen for visitor onboarding.
- Smart home and UI personalization — voice-controlled application integration and real-time network health diagnostics.
The three companies frame the device as more than a tucked-away box: they want the CPE to act as a household's internet hub and a local platform for AI at the edge. That framing is vendor positioning; the concrete deliverables shown at Network X were the parental controls, guest access and diagnostics demos.
Where does 20-gig stand in gFiber's network?
The announcement extends a network upgrade cycle that spans more than a decade. gFiber launched gigabit internet in Kansas City over ten years ago and has since moved the vast majority of its fiber footprint from legacy GPON to XGS-PON, enabling mass-market speeds up to 8 gigabits. It has also deployed 25G-PON technology to deliver symmetrical 20-gig connectivity to homes and businesses.
The new device brings Wi-Fi 8 wireless performance and on-gateway intelligence to that 20-gig tier. Existing gFiber 20-gig customers will be first to receive the Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway, and once the device is fully certified, gFiber plans to upgrade all of its 20-gig customers to the new hardware.
Wi-Fi 8, standardized as 802.11bn, is the next generation of wireless LAN technology following Wi-Fi 7; quad-band operation in a residential gateway is a high-end configuration aimed at dense smart-home environments. The choice of an NPU-equipped platform signals where CPE vendors see differentiation shifting — from raw throughput toward on-device AI services.
How quickly can customers get it?
No pricing or general availability date appears in the announcement. Certification is the stated gate: gFiber will begin upgrading 20-gig customers to the Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway once the device clears that process, making the existing 20-gig base the first wave of recipients.
