Ericsson to Modernize Batelco's Bahrain Mobile Network
Ericsson will upgrade Batelco by Beyon's mobile network across Bahrain with Massive MIMO radios, a cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core and trials of its AI-native link adaptation scheduler.
5G & 6GWhy it matters
- Ericsson signed an agreement to expand and upgrade Batelco by Beyon's mobile network across Bahrain; financial terms undisclosed
- Deployment includes Ericsson Massive MIMO systems and a cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core upgrade
- The partners will trial Ericsson's AI-native Scheduler for Link Adaptation to improve download performance
- Batelco CEO Maitham Abdulla tied the investment to Bahrain's digital transformation ambitions
- Ericsson Gulf President Petra Schirren said the deal strengthens 5G standalone readiness and 5G-Advanced capability
The story
Ericsson has signed an agreement with Batelco by Beyon to expand and modernize the operator's mobile network across Bahrain, in a deal that spans radio access, core infrastructure and AI-driven network optimization.
The contract, announced without financial terms, covers the full breadth of Ericsson's current portfolio. Batelco will deploy the vendor's latest network technology to improve mobile coverage, increase capacity and deliver a more reliable service to customers across the country of roughly 1.5 million people.
For Ericsson, the win extends a long-standing vendor relationship in the Gulf region at a time when the Swedish equipment maker is pushing AI-enabled and cloud-native products as differentiators against Nokia, Huawei and Samsung in competitive RAN tenders.
What technology is Batelco actually buying?
Three components stand out in the agreement.
- AI-native Scheduler for Link Adaptation. The two companies will test Ericsson's machine-learning-based scheduler, which responds to changing radio conditions in real time. Ericsson says the technology makes data transmission more efficient, improving download performance and overall network speeds. The claim comes from the vendor; no independent throughput figures have been published.
- Massive MIMO radio systems. Batelco will introduce Ericsson's Massive MIMO antennas, designed to lift network performance while cutting energy consumption and reducing the amount of equipment required per site.
- Dual-mode 5G Core. Beyond the radio network, Batelco will upgrade its core infrastructure using Ericsson's cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core, which supports both 4G and 5G traffic on a single converged platform.
The dual-mode core detail matters. It signals Batelco is preparing for 5G standalone operation, the architecture required for network slicing and ultra-low-latency services, rather than relying solely on 5G layered over an existing 4G core.
What do the executives say?
Batelco by Beyon CEO Maitham Abdulla framed the deal as part of a wider national agenda. "Our continued investment in expanding and modernising our network reflects our commitment to delivering an exceptional connectivity experience across the Kingdom of Bahrain," he said.
"By enhancing coverage and capacity while deploying advanced technologies, we are building a more efficient network that meets the evolving needs of consumers and businesses. Our collaboration with Ericsson reinforces our commitment to supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain's digital transformation ambitions."
Petra Schirren, Ericsson's President for the Gulf region, pointed to the longer technology arc. "Our collaboration with Batelco brings together advanced radio solutions, AI-enabled capabilities and cloud-native technologies to enhance network performance and customer experiences," she said.
"By expanding connectivity, strengthening 5G standalone readiness and exploring 5G-Advanced capabilities, we are supporting Batelco in building a more efficient and future-ready network, opening new opportunities for innovation and laying the foundation for 6G."
The 6G reference is aspirational marketing at this stage; no 6G standard exists yet and commercial deployments are not expected before the end of the decade. The concrete elements are 5G-Advanced readiness and standalone capability.
What does this change for Bahraini subscribers?
In the near term, users should see better coverage, higher capacity and more consistent download speeds as the upgrades roll out. The AI scheduler trial, if successful, would tune the network to radio conditions faster than conventional scheduling, which typically benefits users at cell edges and in congested areas.
Neither company disclosed deployment timelines, site counts or investment values. The absence of figures makes it difficult to gauge the scale of the modernization against Batelco's existing footprint.
The deal sits within Bahrain's broader digital transformation program, which the government has promoted as a pillar of its economic diversification plans. Batelco, the country's incumbent operator and part of the Beyon group, has positioned network investment as central to that national effort.
Further announcements on rollout milestones, and on the outcome of the AI scheduler testing, are likely to follow as the modernization programme moves from contract signature to deployment.
