C Spire's AI capacity model opens 5G FWA to 500,000 more Mississippi homes

C Spire opened 5G FWA to 500,000 more Mississippi homes with an in-house AI capacity model. FWA sales have tripled, nearing 1,000 per month, said network chief Alan Jones.

Why it matters

  • C Spire extended 5G FWA availability to 500,000 additional Mississippi homes using in-house AI capacity planning models.
  • FWA sales tripled after the model update and market expansion, approaching 1,000 sales per month.
  • 5G Home Internet launched in January 2025 using Inseego's Wavemaker FX3110 indoor router.
  • C Spire upgraded 36 more sites to 5G across its 1,300 cell sites; about two-thirds of its 4G footprint now has 5G.
  • About 14% of C Spire's customer base is on a converged wireless-and-fiber plan under The One Plan.

The story

C Spire has expanded its 5G fixed wireless access footprint to 500,000 additional Mississippi homes, using an AI-boosted capacity planning model that its own data scientists built over roughly ten years.

The regional carrier launched 5G Home Internet in January 2025 to reach households outside its fiber footprint. Since then, its data scientists and mobile network planners have kept refining the models that decide how much spare capacity the 5G network can spare for FWA — and how many customers it can safely carry.

The commercial results are already visible. FWA sales are running three times higher than before the capacity model was updated and the target market enlarged, according to Alan Jones, C Spire's chief network officer. The carrier is now closing in on 1,000 sales per month, he said.

What does the AI model actually do?

The "advanced capacity planning model" took about a decade of development work, after years of using and comparing other companies' models, Jones told Light Reading.

"By adding AI into the mix ... we're able to more accurately predict where our capacity constraints are going to come from ... and how it shifts throughout the day between tower to tower, site to site, customer to customer. All those things we've been able to really get a clean, advanced view on," he said.

C Spire had long run a predictive machine learning model for capacity planning and recently added AI for fine-tuning and extra insights. The tool ingests raw data from its radio access network vendor, Nokia, and its transport vendors — mostly Nokia, plus Fujitsu.

In the carrier's own words, the in-house tool is "an AI/ML-driven geospatial platform for network observability and decision support." It combines:

  • network KPIs and capacity forecasts
  • subscriber penetration and churn
  • backhaul and fiber network data

All of that lands on one interactive map, with automated inputs refreshing daily and hourly.

"It fits perfectly into how we see traffic in a converged network between our fiber operations and our wireless RAN operations," said Jones, noting the platform can monitor FWA across both radio access and transport.

The payoff is simple arithmetic. A sharper view of available capacity let C Spire offer 5G FWA to half a million homes that fiber doesn't reach — households the carrier previously couldn't serve without risking congestion on its mobile network.

How the service reaches customers

The 5G Home Internet service runs on Inseego's 5G Wavemaker FX3110 indoor cellular router. That choice fits two stated goals: a "purely self-install" and an offering that's "easy to fail," in Jones' phrasing.

In practice, that means C Spire pre-plans each install for a good success rate, but if any radiofrequency anomaly degrades the customer's FWA service, returning the equipment is designed to be quick and painless. "The simplicity of the install and the onboarding of the customer was big to us, especially as we've added it to The One Plan," he said.

The One Plan is C Spire's converged wireless-and-fiber bundle, recently expanded to include 5G FWA. Customers can now pick FWA or fiber alongside their mobile plan. The carrier doesn't disclose subscriber counts, but it says about 14% of its customer base has already signed on to a converged plan.

Where the radio network stands

The FWA expansion also rides on recent 5G upgrades. C Spire just moved a new batch of 36 sites to 5G, within a total of 1,300 cell sites. About two-thirds of its 4G footprint is now covered by 5G, the carrier said.

The strategy is unglamorous and effective: squeeze more homes out of existing spectrum and sites by knowing precisely, tower by tower and hour by hour, where the slack sits. With two-thirds of the footprint still to convert and a converged bundle pulling in roughly a seventh of its base, C Spire has room to keep widening the addressable market.
