Why it matters

  • BTRC has proposed base prices for an upcoming lower-band spectrum auction in Bangladesh
  • The proposal covers sub-1GHz spectrum suited to wide-area mobile coverage
  • Auction date and final price levels are not yet confirmed

The story

Bangladesh's telecom regulator, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), has proposed base prices for the country's upcoming auction of lower-band mobile spectrum, according to Developing Telecoms.

The proposal sets the regulatory floor — the minimum reserve price per megahertz — that operators will have to meet when bidding for low-frequency airwaves in the next spectrum assignment round. Lower-band spectrum, typically below 1GHz, is prized by mobile operators because it carries signals over long distances and penetrates buildings more effectively than higher frequencies, making it the workhorse for wide-area 4G coverage and early 5G deployments in many markets.

The BTRC has not yet confirmed the auction date, the specific bands on offer, or the final price levels, which typically require approval from the government before the regulator issues auction rules and a final information memorandum to bidders.

What happens next?

Once the base prices receive government sign-off, the BTRC is expected to publish auction guidelines and invite Bangladesh's mobile operators — including Grameenphone, Robi and state-owned Teletalk — to submit bids. Operators' willingness to bid will hinge on how the proposed reserve prices compare with their balance-sheet capacity and network investment plans.

Bangladesh's operators have previously pressed the regulator for lower spectrum pricing, arguing that high assignment costs constrain spending on network expansion and quality upgrades. The outcome of this pricing proposal will therefore shape both the competitiveness of the auction and the pace of future mobile broadband investment in the market.
