Why it matters

  • Vi Business first launched its hybrid SD-WAN service in 2023.
  • The Cisco Meraki integration was announced on Thursday and covers leased lines, broadband and cellular connectivity.
  • Vodafone Idea's chief enterprise business officer is M P Sunil Kumar; Cisco's partner organisation MD for India & South Asia is Ashok Shivashankar.
  • The deal involves three SD-WAN building blocks: application-aware routing, built-in security, and unified cloud-managed Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity.

The story

Vi Business, the enterprise arm of Indian telecom operator Vodafone Idea, has integrated Cisco Meraki's cloud-managed networking stack into its hybrid SD-WAN offering, giving customers one dashboard to run application-aware routing, security and connectivity across leased lines, broadband and cellular links.

The partnership, announced on Thursday, extends a service Vi Business first launched in 2023 to help enterprises modernise wide-area networks through end-to-end managed services. The Meraki layer centralises that management with built-in Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity alongside security controls, replacing a more fragmented operating model for distributed sites.

What does the integration actually deliver?

Three elements matter to enterprise buyers under the updated arrangement, according to Vi Business:

  • A single dashboard covering SD-WAN, wired and wireless networking, and built-in security
  • Application- and performance-aware routing across diverse access circuits
  • One point of contact for proactive monitoring, lifecycle management and service assurance

The fully managed hybrid SD-WAN rides on Vi's nationwide connectivity backbone, the operator said in its announcement.

Why Cisco Meraki, and why now?

Cisco Meraki brings a consumerised cloud dashboard and a sizeable installed base of branch devices. For Vi Business, integrating the platform avoids the months of orchestration work typically required to bolt a less consumerised SD-WAN vendor onto managed broadband and cellular underlays.

The move also sharpens Vi Business's competitive position against Reliance Jio's enterprise unit and Tata Communications, both of which sell managed SD-WAN portfolios stitched together from global vendors. The Meraki brand gives Vi Business a recognised name at the WAN edge — useful when mid-market customers compare competing carrier proposals.

What are the executives saying?

M P Sunil Kumar, chief enterprise business officer at Vodafone Idea, framed the deal in operational rather than marketing terms. "By integrating advanced cloud-managed SD-WAN, wired and wireless networking and built-in security, we enable enterprises to centrally manage distributed networks while radically simplifying operations," he said.

He added: "Combined with our nationwide connectivity, cloud-managed networking capabilities, fully managed services, and end-to-end support, our collaboration with Cisco ensures our clients build resilient, scalable, and future-ready networks."

On the vendor side, Ashok Shivashankar, partner organisation managing director for Cisco India & South Asia, positioned the integration inside a broader enterprise shift. "As we navigate an AI-first world, the modern enterprise network must be intelligent, secure and built for constant change," he said.

Shivashankar added that the joint work with Vi Business helps enterprises "modernize their networks with a managed hybrid SD-WAN solution that enables greater agility, scalability and operational efficiency while accelerating digital transformation."

What does the source actually disclose?

The announcement carries no commercial figures: no contract value, no deployment count, no revenue target and no rollout timeline. Both companies describe the integration as a capability upgrade to the 2023 service rather than a new commercial milestone.

That matters because India's enterprise SD-WAN market has grown crowded, with carrier-managed offerings competing against pure-play SD-WAN vendors and SASE specialists. The next twelve months will test whether the technical consolidation translates into mid-market wins.

What comes next?

Vi Business's commercial leverage depends on how effectively it bundles Meraki-managed branch gear with cellular failover in front of Indian CIOs weighing managed SD-WAN contracts against running their own SASE overlays in-house.
