SpaceX/SI Enters Top-10 Tier-Two Cloud Ranking as Q3 Spend Hits $167.7bn
Q3 cloud spending rose 55% to $167.7bn as SpaceX/SI entered the tier-two top 10; AI services now account for roughly a third of the global market.
Networks & InfrastructureWhy it matters
- Q3 enterprise cloud spending rose 55% year-on-year to $167.7 billion, with trailing 12-month revenue at $558 billion.
- SpaceX/SI entered the top 10 tier-two cloud providers by service revenue in Q3 after starting commercial rollout this year.
- Amazon led with 26% share, Microsoft 19%, Google 16%; the US accounts for 44% of the global market.
- The cloud market doubled in size in eight quarters, with AI-specific services now roughly one third of total revenue.
- Neoclouds including CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, Fluidstack, Together AI and Nscale posted the highest tier-two growth rates.
The story
Global enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services surged 55% year-on-year to reach $167.7 billion in Q3, the quarter in which SpaceX/SI entered the ranks of the top 10 tier-two cloud providers by service revenue, according to Synergy Research Group.
The figure marks a market that has doubled in size in just eight quarters. Trailing 12-month revenues hit $558 billion, and AI-specific cloud services now account for roughly a third of the total.
SpaceX/SI began its commercial rollout this year, after SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal in February. The AI and cloud unit adopted its current name in October, following US President Donald Trump's effort to rebrand the technology as super intelligence (SI). Entering the tier-two top 10 within months of a commercial launch is an unusually fast climb for a new infrastructure player.
Who leads the market?
Amazon retained the market lead in Q3 with a 26% share. Microsoft followed at 19%, with Google third at 16%. The big three, in other words, still control 61% of a market growing at more than 50% annually.
Below that tier, the picture is shifting. Synergy Research named Oracle and the neoclouds CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, Fluidstack, Together AI and Nscale as the fastest-growing tier-two providers in Q3. The research firm noted that rapid neocloud growth is eroding the market share of the more established cloud providers.
Anthropic and OpenAI also "rank strongly" through the platform portions of their operations, Synergy Research stated, though it did not publish exact metrics for either company. For practitioners, that means the competitive set now includes AI labs themselves, not just infrastructure specialists.
What does AI demand change?
Synergy Research Group chief analyst John Dinsdale said AI has reshaped cloud services, customer demand and growth prospects. The decade before ChatGPT's launch saw providers move workloads and investment from on-premises data centres to public clouds. AI is now driving expansion on a scale unforeseen four years ago, he said.
"As the growth rate jumps to well over 50%, the leading cloud providers are benefiting from surging revenues, but they are also facing a much-changed market landscape, with AI labs and neoclouds emerging as both partners and competitors," Dinsdale noted.
That dual role carries practical consequences. The same neoclouds buying capacity from hyperscale suppliers also compete for AI workloads, and platform operators such as Anthropic and OpenAI sit on both sides of the same divide.
For network and cloud teams, a market doubling every two years implies capacity planning at a pace few procurement cycles were built for, with a growing share of spend tied to AI-specific services rather than general compute.
Which regions grew fastest?
Growth remained strong across all regions in Q3. The United States, by far the largest market, grew fastest among major countries and now accounts for 44% of the global total.
In local currency terms, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Ireland, Canada and Taiwan ranked among the strongest performers. The UK and Germany remained Europe's largest cloud markets.
The US figure means nearly half of global cloud infrastructure revenue flows through one national market, a concentration vendors and regulators alike will continue to watch as AI buildouts accelerate.
Synergy Research's Q3 data suggests the tier-two reshuffle is not finished. With SpaceX/SI scaling a commercial rollout that started this year, and neoclouds still compounding at the top of the growth table, established providers face continued share pressure even as overall revenues climb.
