SoftBank books first full MWC Barcelona stand for March 2027
SoftBank will make its MWC Barcelona debut with a full stand in March 2027, pitching itself as an AI platformer to fellow operators from 1 to 4 March.
Why it matters
- SoftBank takes its first full MWC Barcelona stand at MWC27, 1–4 March 2027.
- CEO Junichi Miyakawa brands SoftBank an 'AI platformer' ahead of the show.
- SoftBank expects the biggest stand among operators in Hall 3 at the Fira Gran Via.
- The stand will cover an AI-native network, potential 6G tech, HAPS and Cubic3 vehicle systems.
- Until 2027, SoftBank's MWC presence was limited to partners' stands.
The story
SoftBank Corp will take its first full stand at MWC Barcelona in March 2027, ending years of appearing only on partners' stands at the industry's biggest annual show. The Japanese operator expects to run the largest operator presence in Hall 3 at the Fira Gran Via, where MWC27 Barcelona runs from 1 to 4 March 2027.
It's a debut, but a delayed one. Until now, SoftBank has relied on representation on partner sites rather than paying for floor space of its own. That arrangement ends in 2027, when the company gets a stand of its own to explain what it has become.
What does SoftBank want to be in 2027?
An "AI platformer", in the words of President and CEO Junichi Miyakawa. That label looks set to anchor the messaging on the Barcelona stand, alongside the claim that SoftBank understands operators' AI deployment problems better than most vendors pitching them solutions.
Miyakawa said SoftBank is "uniquely positioned to understand the challenges" operators face in deploying AI because it "pioneered our own" systems using the technology. Translation: SoftBank built the systems first, broke them first, and now wants to sell that experience to peers.
The company frames the shift as a move from a "traditional telecommunications carrier" to a provider of a "full-stack" of services. That stack now spans network infrastructure, energy systems and a range of AI developments, including data centres and the related compute capacity that makes AI actually run.
What will actually sit on the stand?
SoftBank plans to showcase its AI-native network, its cloud platform and supporting infrastructure. The display is aimed squarely at other operators, with the pitch that they could deploy AI in their own overhauls the way SoftBank has done in its.
Beyond the core network story, the stand agenda covers a broad set of technologies:
- Physical AI — applying AI to physical systems rather than just software.
- Coverage expansion — broadening the range of connectivity across businesses, people and things.
- Potential 6G technologies — an early look at what comes after 5G.
- HAPS and non-terrestrial connectivity — high-altitude platform stations and other set-ups that put infrastructure in the sky rather than on towers.
- Software-defined vehicles — systems developed by Cubic3, the specialist SoftBank is bringing along for the ride.
It's a wide portfolio for one stand. Whether visitors read it as a coherent stack or a grab bag depends on how well SoftBank joins the pieces together.
Why a stand, and why now?
The commercial logic is straightforward. SoftBank has spent years repositioning from carrier to something broader, and a full Hall 3 presence at MWC is the industry's loudest available billboard. Previous partner-stand appearances kept the company present but subordinated; a full stand puts its own brand, and its "AI platformer" claim, in front of operators who might otherwise meet only vendor sales teams.
There's also a peer-to-peer angle. Miyakawa's positioning leans on SoftBank's own operational experience with AI rather than on product marketing alone. Operators tend to trust other operators' scars more than vendors' slideshows, and SoftBank clearly intends to work that dynamic on the stand floor in 2027.
The timeline is fixed and public. MWC27 Barcelona runs at the Fira Gran Via from 1 to 4 March 2027, and SoftBank's debut stand — billed as the biggest among fellow operators in Hall 3 — will be there from day one, showing an AI-native network, 6G candidates, HAPS and Cubic3's vehicle systems to whoever walks the floor.
