The story
Smart Communications, PLDT's wireless arm in the Philippines, has launched AI.Smart, a browser-based workspace that bundles access to AWS Nova, ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini and Thinking Machines into a single subscription priced from 49 Philippine pesos ($0.78) for seven days.
The pricing model directly targets the structural barrier that keeps most Filipinos out of mainstream AI services. Subscription AI tools typically cost around US$20 a month and require a credit card. The majority of Filipinos use prepaid mobile phones, and many have never owned a credit card. AI.Smart removes both obstacles: subscribers buy credit packs inside the app, charge them to their Smart or TNT mobile account, and confirm a one-time PIN via SMS. The credits are added instantly.
"A week of use for the price of a cup of coffee, paid the way Filipinos already pay for everything on their phone, and built for the way Filipinos work, in their own language and on their own documents," the operator said in a statement.
A larger tier exists for heavier users. The PHP499 ($7.98) plan runs for 30 days and supports up to ten users sharing a pool of credits, which Smart positions as suitable for small businesses and teams. Beyond prepaid load and postpaid billing, customers can top up with credit or debit cards and select e-wallets.
"At PHP49 for a week, a student can get help with exam preparation or a research paper, a freelancer can turn client notes into a polished proposal, and a family can plan a trip, a budget, or a celebration," said Lloyd Manaloto, first vice president and OIC at Smart.
"AI should be for everyone, not just for those who can afford premium AI services. We are making AI more inclusive by bringing powerful AI models and tools together in one affordable platform, giving more Filipinos the opportunity to use AI to learn, create, work smarter, and achieve more," he added.
The vendor stack
Smart did not build the platform alone. AI.Smart is powered by Avtica, a Philippine-based AI company that develops localized AI products in partnership with telecom and cloud providers. The service runs in a dedicated AWS landing zone set up for Smart, with model inference served through Amazon Bedrock.
The platform handles model routing automatically. AI.Smart selects the most suitable model based on the user's prompt, then produces output such as generated content and images, documents and presentations, or data analysis in English, Filipino or Taglish.
On privacy, Smart says everything a subscriber uploads stays private to their own workspace and is never used to train AI models. The company adds that subscriber data is never retained, is encrypted, and is handled in line with the Philippine Data Privacy Act.
Prepaid as the distribution channel
Avtica's framing makes the commercial logic explicit. The company is betting that emerging-market AI adoption will run through mobile accounts rather than card-based subscriptions, and the Philippines is its first market.
"The next billion AI users will not come from Silicon Valley. They will come from Manila, Jakarta, Mexico City, Bogotá, Lagos and Dhaka, and they will arrive on a prepaid phone. This is how AI reaches everyone: not by waiting for prices to fall, but by building locally, pricing locally, and charging to the account people already have. The Philippines is first. The model travels," said Avtica CEO Winston Damarillo.
That claim — "the model travels" — is vendor ambition rather than deployed fact; no other operator deals were announced. But the underlying economics are sound enough that the approach invites imitation. A telco charging AI credits to existing prepaid balances sidesteps payment infrastructure that large parts of Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa lack, while giving the operator a new revenue stream built on wholesale access to models it does not have to develop.
For Smart, the service also fits a broader pattern of Philippine operators seeking digital services revenue beyond connectivity. The company launched AI.Smart on Thursday and has not disclosed pricing for enterprise tiers or usage caps beyond the PHP49 and PHP499 packs, nor subscriber targets for the platform.
The near-term test is uptake among Smart and TNT's prepaid base at the entry price point. If the credit-pack model proves out in the Philippines, Avtica's stated roadmap points to replication across other prepaid-dominated emerging markets.
