Samsung and Verizon Complete Key Technology Trial for 6G
Samsung and Verizon have completed a key 6G technology trial, advancing next-generation research ahead of expected standardization later this decade.
5G & 6GWhy it matters
- Samsung and Verizon completed a key technology trial for 6G networks
- 6G standardization has not formally begun; commercial rollout is expected in the early 2030s
- The trial demonstrates candidate technologies that may feed into future standards work
The story
Samsung and Verizon have completed a key technology trial for future 6G networks, the Korea Times reported, moving the two companies a step further along the long research road toward the next generation of mobile technology.
The trial, described by the newspaper as a significant milestone in 6G development, ties together two companies with a long track record of collaboration on advanced wireless work. Verizon, the largest US mobile operator by revenue, has worked with Samsung's networks division on earlier generations of mobile infrastructure, and the pair have now extended that cooperation into pre-standard 6G research.
The completion of the trial lands at a moment when the industry is still shaping what 6G will actually be. Standardization work has not yet begun in earnest within 3GPP, the body that produces the specifications behind 5G and, before it, LTE. Most vendors and operators expect the first 6G specification releases toward the end of this decade, with commercial networks to follow in the early 2030s. Against that timeline, trials such as the one Samsung and Verizon have just concluded serve as input to the technical debates that will define candidate technologies for the standard.
For Samsung, the result strengthens its position in next-generation research as it competes with Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei for future operator contracts. The Korean vendor has invested steadily in 6G candidate technologies, including work in the terahertz frequency bands that researchers consider one possible path to the much higher throughput envisioned for 6G. For Verizon, participation keeps the operator close to the technology choices that will shape its network evolution once its current C-band 5G buildout matures.
No commercial 6G deployments are on the immediate horizon. The trial's significance is technical rather than commercial: it demonstrates feasibility of technologies that may — or may not — find their way into the eventual standard. Vendor claims about 6G performance remain, for now, laboratory results rather than network reality.
Both companies are expected to continue joint research as international standards bodies move closer to opening formal 6G standardization work in the coming years.
