Why it matters

  • RTVE Play drew more than 12 million unique users in October, up 26.2% on October 2025.
  • The service has over 17 million registered users and a daily average of 1.2 million.
  • Cumulative consumption since launch: more than 1.17 billion hours and 3.2 billion views.
  • The Idolo Awards stream for the first time on December 2.
  • Content Director Alberto Fernández spoke at a fifth-anniversary event on November 5.

The story

Spain's RTVE Play drew more than 12 million unique users in October, a 26.2% jump over October 2025 and the platform's best month since launch five years ago. The figure, announced ahead of the service's fifth anniversary, consolidates RTVE Play's position as Spain's leading broadcaster video-on-demand (BVoD) platform.

The milestone matters for practitioners tracking European public-service streaming. Commercial platforms such as Netflix dominate total viewing, but the BVoD category measures catch-up and on-demand services operated by broadcasters. RTVE Play now leads that category in Spain on unique-user reach.

What do the underlying numbers say?

Registered users exceed 17 million, according to Adobe Analytics data cited by RTVE. Daily average usage stands at 1.2 million users. The catalogue holds almost half a million videos, totalling close to 250,000 hours of content.

Cumulative consumption since the 2021 launch provides the longer frame:

  • More than 1.17 billion hours of content consumed
  • 3.2 billion views recorded over five years

Put in per-year terms, that averages roughly 234 million viewing hours annually, a substantial figure for a public broadcaster's on-demand arm in a market of about 48 million people.

What is new on the platform?

To mark the anniversary, RTVE has rolled out a slate of features and content:

  • A new vertical app for Playz, the youth-skewing brand
  • The premiere of true crime series Stupid Cupid
  • Expanded entertainment programming on the EN PLAY channel
  • A new ARTE hub, bringing the Franco-German cultural broadcaster's output to Spanish viewers
  • A documentary and two interactive features marking the 70th anniversary of TVE, RTVE's television arm

The service will also broadcast the Idolo Awards for the first time on December 2, adding a live event to the schedule.

The moves signal a deliberate broadening. Vertical video targets younger mobile-first audiences. The ARTE hub adds international prestige content at likely modest incremental rights cost. Interactive formats extend the public-service experimentation mandate beyond linear catch-up.

What did RTVE's content director say?

Alberto Fernández, Content Director at RTVE Play, addressed a celebratory event on November 5. He framed the anniversary results within upcoming changes to audience measurement rather than as a marketing win alone.

"I really believe that on the horizon of the new global measurements, RTVE Play has placed the RTVE group in a very advantageous position," Fernández said. "But it is important to emphasise that what people are looking for on RTVE Play is public television that has meaning for citizens."

He described the platform as public television offering "entertainment, outreach and information", and added: "With new forms of experimentation, we are building the foundations for RTVE to be sustainable in the future."

Why the measurement remark matters

Fernández's reference to "new global measurements" points to the industry shift toward unified cross-platform audience metrics in Europe, where Spain's CIM consortium already merges linear and streaming data for under-35 audiences. A strong unique-user base positions RTVE well as advertisers and regulators move toward comparable streaming ratings. The quote also separates commercial positioning from the public-service mission: reach secures relevance, but sustainability rests on distinctive content.

The growth record strengthens RTVE's hand as it negotiates financing and distribution in an increasingly contested Spanish streaming market. The next test comes with the Idolo Awards broadcast on December 2 and the performance of the new slate through the final quarter.
