Ooredoo Switches on Qatar's First 5G+ Network
Ooredoo has switched on Qatar's first 5G+ network and launched a commercial broadband service on it, moving the technology from trials to paying home users.
5G & 6GWhy it matters
- Ooredoo launched Qatar's first 5G+ network
- A commercial broadband service runs on the new network from launch
- The rollout begins with fixed wireless access broadband customers
- Ooredoo has not yet disclosed full national coverage or rollout timelines
The story
Ooredoo has launched Qatar's first 5G+ network and opened a commercial broadband service on top of it, moving the Gulf state's most advanced mobile technology from trials into paying customers' homes.
The Qatari incumbent announced the deployment this week, positioning 5G+ as the next step beyond its existing fifth-generation footprint. The first product to run on the new network is fixed wireless access broadband, which delivers home internet over mobile radio links rather than fiber or copper. It is the same commercial playbook operators across the Gulf have used to monetise network upgrades quickly.
What is 5G+ and how does it differ from 5G?
5G+ generally denotes a faster tier of fifth-generation service, typically built on higher-capacity spectrum and newer radio features than a standard 5G layer. For Ooredoo, the branding signals that customers on the new network should see stronger throughput and more consistent speeds than on its earlier 5G rollout.
The commercial distinction matters more than the label. Ooredoo has a paying broadband product running on 5G+ from day one, which separates the launch from demonstration-stage deployments that exist mainly for marketing purposes.
Who gets it first?
The rollout begins with commercial broadband customers in Qatar. Fixed wireless access suits markets where fiber penetration is uneven or where operators want a faster route to new subscribers than trenching cable allows.
Ooredoo has not yet published full coverage figures or a complete national rollout timetable. The operator said the launch makes Qatar among the first markets in the region with a live 5G+ broadband offering.
Why the Gulf keeps setting the pace
Qatar's operators have consistently deployed new mobile generations early, competing on network quality in a small, dense and wealthy market. Rival Qataris and regional peers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia have pushed comparable upgrades, making network capability a primary battleground for subscriber share.
For Ooredoo, which also operates across the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia, a home-market first serves as a showcase before any wider group-wide introduction.
The launch gives Qatar an early 5G+ broadband service, and the pace of its expansion beyond the initial footprint will show whether the upgrade becomes a mass-market platform or stays a premium niche.
