Why it matters

  • DNB completed RM5.2 billion in financing for its 5G network expansion
  • The funds support the next phase of Malaysia's single wholesale 5G rollout
  • DNB operates Malaysia's shared national 5G network used by mobile operators on wholesale terms

The story

Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Malaysia's single wholesale 5G network operator, has completed RM5.2 billion (about US$1.1 billion) in financing to fund the next phase of the country's 5G rollout.

The company said the funds will support continued expansion of its shared 5G infrastructure, which mobile operators in Malaysia access on a wholesale basis rather than building duplicate networks themselves. DNB was established as a state-backed vehicle to deploy a single national 5G network — a model regulators in several markets have watched closely as an alternative to the traditional approach in which each operator builds its own radio access network.

Why does the financing matter?

The RM5.2bil figure represents the largest dedicated funding commitment DNB has secured for its build-out to date, and it arrives at a sensitive moment for the project. Malaysia's government has been reviewing the structure of its 5G market, including plans to introduce a second wholesale network once DNB's deployment reaches established coverage targets.

For the country's mobile operators — which market their own 5G services over DNB's infrastructure — the financing signals that capacity investment will continue while that policy debate plays out. Access terms and pricing on the shared network have been recurring points of negotiation between DNB and its operator customers since the network launched.

What comes next?

DNB says the financing underpins what it describes as the next phase of 5G growth in Malaysia, focusing on extending the network and supporting rising traffic as consumer and enterprise adoption increases. The completion of the RM5.2bil facility keeps the deployment funded through that expansion window, ahead of any decision on how a second network operator would enter the market.
