Digicel Samoa lights up Asau tower after WST$22m network push

Digicel Samoa has launched a new tower in Asau, western Savai'i, its third new site on the island this year under a WST$22 million (US$7.9m) network investment programme.

Why it matters

  • Digicel Samoa launched a new tower in Asau, western Savai'i, announced on Tuesday.
  • The operator has invested WST$22 million (US$7.9 million) in network infrastructure over the past 18 months.
  • The programme includes additional 4G and 5G sites across Upolu and Savai'i, with Apia 5G coverage reaching 25 sites.
  • Two further towers in Samalaeulu and Falelima were launched earlier this year on Savai'i.
  • CEO Karl Vizvary said the investment is about connecting communities, supporting businesses and widening digital access.

The story

Digicel Samoa has switched on a new tower in Asau, extending wireless coverage to western Savai'i on the back of a network investment programme worth WST$22 million (US$7.9 million) over the past 18 months.

The company announced the launch on Tuesday, describing Asau as a key centre in Savai'i's western region. The operator picked it as a priority site to absorb growing customer demand and shore up coverage and reliability on the country's largest and highest island.

Asau is the third new site Digicel Samoa has added on Savai'i this year. Back in May, the operator launched two towers in Samalaeulu and Falelima. Small islands, incremental towers — the arithmetic of Pacific network building rarely gets more literal than this.

What does the WST$22 million actually buy?

The headline figure covers network infrastructure spending across the past 18 months, including the rollout of additional 4G and 5G sites on both of Samoa's main islands, Upolu and Savai'i. The same programme earlier this year pushed Digicel Samoa's 5G footprint in the capital Apia to 25 sites.

So the Asau tower isn't a standalone gesture. It's the rural edge of a build-out that has been running since at least January, when the Apia 5G expansion was announced.

Digicel Samoa CEO Karl Vizvary framed the spending in community terms rather than pure coverage metrics.

"This investment is about more than just infrastructure – it's about connecting communities, supporting businesses and giving more people access to the opportunities that digital connectivity provides," Vizvary said in a statement.

A fair sentiment, and one every operator in the Pacific repeats. The commercial reality underneath it is simpler: customers in Asau previously made do with weaker signal, and weak signal tends to cap usage and revenue. A tower fixes both.

Where does this fit in the Pacific picture?

Digicel's Samoan operation sits within a broader Digicel Pacific footprint that has been busy across the region. Recent months have brought the MyCash mobile wallet connection to the Ria remittance network in March, and the sister operation in Fiji has taken on a universal service obligation contract to connect the remote Lau Group islands.

The Samoa build-out also tracks a wider pattern among Pacific operators: steady, unspectacular investment in 4G and 5G coverage rather than splashy launches. Telecom Fiji entered the 5G race in December, three months after Vodafone Fiji and Digicel Fiji started their own first-phase services in September 2025.

For Savai'i specifically, the significance is practical. The island's terrain — Samoa's highest — makes coverage expensive to extend, and western settlements like Asau sit furthest from the network core on Upolu, where Apia and most of the population concentrate.

What comes next?

Digicel Samoa hasn't attached a fresh figure or deadline to the next phase of its rollout. What the record does show is a consistent cadence: three new towers on Savai'i within roughly four months, an Apia 5G footprint at 25 sites, and an 18-month spending programme that shows no sign of stopping at Asau.

With WST$22 million already committed and western Savai'i now on the map, the question is which settlement on the island gets its tower next.
