The story
Comsol, the South African wireless network operator, is set to build a new 5G network in South Africa with financial backing from Convergence Partners, Bloomberg reports.
The deal gives one of South Africa's established enterprise-focused connectivity providers fresh capital to expand into next-generation mobile infrastructure, a market currently dominated by Vodacom, MTN and Telkom's Swiftnet fibre-to-the-tower ambitions. Convergence Partners, a private equity investor with a long track record in African digital infrastructure, is providing the financial muscle behind the build.
Comsol already operates one of the largest carrier-grade wireless networks in South Africa, built on licensed spectrum, and has positioned connectivity for enterprises as its core business. The move into 5G extends that strategy rather than marking a shift toward consumer mobile services, based on the company's existing positioning.
The announcement lands as South Africa's 5G market continues to broaden following the long-delayed spectrum auction in March 2022, when the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) finally released high-demand spectrum after more than a decade of regulatory deadlock. That auction, which raised roughly R14.4 billion ($900 million at the time), lowered the barrier for operators beyond the big three mobile groups to plan standalone 5G deployments.
Convergence Partners' involvement fits its established pattern. The firm has previously backed pan-African infrastructure plays and has repeatedly targeted investments that address connectivity gaps across the continent. Its support for Comsol signals investor confidence that private 5G and enterprise-grade wireless services in South Africa can generate returns outside the consumer market, where price competition remains intense.
Details of the rollout timeline, the number of sites planned and the spectrum arrangements underpinning the new network have not yet been disclosed. Comsol and Convergence Partners are expected to publish further build-out and investment specifics as the project moves from announcement to deployment.
