Why it matters

  • BBC News channel launched live on YouTube in the UK and US on 15 October 2026
  • The launch brings the number of markets with live BBC News on YouTube to six, including Australia, Kenya, Nigeria and Poland
  • The service starts as an immediate trial with no announced end date
  • UK viewers can also watch via iPlayer, the BBC News website and app; US viewers via cable, FAST/connected TV and BBC apps
  • BBC executives frame the move as part of a strategy to reach new and younger audiences

The story

The BBC News channel started streaming live on YouTube in the UK and US on 15 October 2026, extending its presence on the platform to six markets. The launch takes immediate effect as a trial and puts the broadcaster's rolling coverage of world events, politics, business, technology and culture in front of YouTube's audience in its two largest English-language markets.

The move follows earlier rollouts in Australia, Kenya, Nigeria and Poland, where the channel already streams live on the platform. For UK viewers, YouTube now sits alongside BBC iPlayer, the BBC News website and the broadcaster's app as a way to watch the channel. US audiences can already find it on cable, FAST and connected TV platforms, the BBC website and the BBC app.

The economics behind the decision are straightforward. Younger viewers increasingly find news on social video platforms rather than linear television, and a live presence on YouTube puts BBC journalism into that flow without requiring a new distribution deal. The broadcaster describes the UK and US launch as part of a wider YouTube strategy aimed at reaching new and younger audiences.

What does the trial change for viewers?

For the first time, a viewer in London or New York can watch the BBC News channel as it airs, free, inside the same app they use for entertainment and creator content. The stream draws on the BBC's global network of journalists and correspondents, covering international and domestic news, political developments, business, technology, culture and breaking events.

The trial framing matters. The BBC has not committed to a permanent service, and the phrase "immediate effect" signals a soft launch rather than a finished product. How the channel performs against audience targets will likely determine whether the arrangement continues past the trial period.

How do the two companies frame it?

Anjali Kapoor, Director of AI, Innovation and Growth for BBC News, framed the launch as a response to changing habits. "Audiences increasingly expect news to be available wherever they are, on the platforms they use throughout their day," she said. "Launching the BBC News channel on YouTube in the UK and US is an important step in bringing our trusted journalism to even more people."

She added that the move "will make it easier for audiences to access live coverage of the stories shaping our world, while helping us reach new audiences in the places and at the times that work best for them."

Alison Lomax, YouTube UK Managing Director, called the six-market availability "an incredible milestone" that makes "trusted news even more accessible to a new generation of digital first viewers."

What comes next?

Neither company set an end date for the trial, nor did they disclose the commercial terms of the arrangement. The BBC's stated goal is reach: finding viewers who do not open iPlayer or tune to linear channels, in the places and at the times that suit them.

If the trial holds, expect the BBC to extend the model further. The channel's YouTube footprint has already grown from four markets to six, and the broadcaster's platform strategy points toward meeting audiences where they already spend their hours.
